Anime Review: Chuuzenji-sensei Mononoke Kougiraku

This anime tells a story about mysteries and Chuuzenji-sensei, who tries to solve those mysteries. However, I personally didn’t enjoy it much for several reasons. Here they are:

1. Mysteries are resolved too quickly

I feel like each mystery in this anime gets resolved way too fast, almost like: 1 episode = 1 case. For example, Episode C ends, and then Episode D starts with an entirely new mystery... it just feels too rushed. I felt the same way in almost every episode.

2. Chuuzenji-sensei feels too overpowered, and Kanna is too dependent

One of the worst anime that I've ever seen.

The animation constantly swaps from 2d to 3d gci, to the point where sometimes it changes every five seconds or so. The cgi looks identical to Berserk 2016 animation, horrible. The 2d animation isn't even that good either, its okay the first episode or two, but you can really see the lack of detail and movement once the MC gets to the first town.

I picked up this anime back then when it was still airing. I was intrigued by it’s unique concept and experimental animation style. It was new to me, back then I always watch the flashy and action packed anime's and shows like this was not really my thing. But I thought how about a change of scene? try something new, so I decided to watch it and give it a try. These kinds of original anime are either hit or miss; either they become the next great thing, and other times they are forgotten entirely. I was hoping for the latter. However just a couple ... episodes in, I decided to drop it. At that time, I was confused about it’s ideas, I just didn’t understand it at all, and it felt directionless to me. Since I was prioritizing more popular shows back then, I thought it was better to drop it if I wasn't enjoying it.

Years later, a lot have changed. Due to growing responsibilities, I no longer really have the luxury of watching anime. However, I make an effort to watch some when I do have the time. Since the limited time, I always make sure that the shows I watch I enjoy it, especially those single season anime's. I didn’t completely forget about Sonny Boy, I always see it in my recommendation. I always wanted to like it, give it a second chance, that maybe I’ll appreciate it more. So that’s what I did.

7 Episodes in, its still the same, despite having a better grasp and understanding. Actually, I noticed more flaws watching this the second time.The characters, they were empty, their actions and motive was not justify, it’s like they just exist. Some scenes were unnecessary , it’s like they just happened, no whys and hows, they just show it. Each episodes felt disconnected to each other. There was no logic and payoff. The show did have some high points, such as in episode 6, but overall, there were more low points than high points. Again I was considering to drop it, I was struggling to watch it, it felt like I’m forcing myself, but I thought since I’m already halfway I should just finish it, maybe it would get better.

As you can see, I rated this anime very high, but so far my review is not reflecting and giving the justice to the score that I gave this anime. It seems like I am criticizing it, and really up until this point I thought it was reasonable. I want this anime to be good, with me continuing it hopefully it is a decision that I won’t regret...

I hadn’t noticed how quickly it flew by—it was over in a flash. You know a show is really good when you completely forget about everything else around you. It pulls you in and makes you lose track of time. That’s exactly how I felt watching episode 8 through the last episodes; I barely noticed the episodes slipping past. The payoff was fantastic. Everything in the story, scenes, soundtrack, was all excellent, even the emotion was running high. Especially the last episode, the whole episode for me solidified it as a great anime, that scene still resonates with me. After watching the last episode, I had an eye opener, it made me realize that I was watching this anime in a different angle, it was not the perspective the show wants us to view it. It was not about them surviving and escaping this weird and crazy dimensions. It was about the characters it self, them experiencing adolescences, it’s about moving forward, making decisions and initiatives, carving out your future despite the grim and predetermined future. All along It was a coming-of-age anime. This realization moved me, especially from someone who can relate to them.

The last episode was the last episode for us, but for the characters it was only the beginning.

finishing the show, I re watched some episodes that hadn’t made much sense to me at first. This time around, things started to make sense, the pieces was fitting in. The episodes may not have gone in the direction I wished for, but at least I now understand why they went that way. Just like in the story, the characters chose a path, not necessarily the best one for them, but a path nonetheless. It highlights the importance of making choices, regardless of whether they lead somewhere perfect. Some of the characters still felt a bit empty or underdeveloped, but I think the show made that sacrifice on purpose. By letting them fade into the background, it was able to focus more on the main cast, justifying them.

It seems like in this review I have yapped a lot, but really I could go on and on about this show. Is this the greatest anime ever? Far from it. But shows like this don’t come a lot, it’s something that from every now and then we can appreciate it. This show is for the people who enjoy this types of show, it does not really appeal for everyone. Yes you can say that it’s not a great show, if it’s flawed and inconsistent, but I think in this show sometimes it’s weaknesses are it’s strengths.

Kudos to the people behind it, they were really passionate about this show, and I thank them for letting me experience it. Looking back at this review, it felt like it was more of a reflection really.

Is a simple quick short anime to binged and they do have some wholesome moments but if you want like a good story plot , this anime doesn’t deliver much as it has a few plot holes and no connection in the storyline , and often a lot of huge jumps here and there.

For what it's worth, I enjoyed it. I definitely think it there are areas which were lacking, for instance the intrigue was not what I hoped for a show about political intrigue. So I first watched parasyte when I was a young teen, after 10 years I decided it was worth a shoot to rewatch it, needlesly to say that I wasnt disapointed.

The main theme without a doubt is the circle of life, more so focused on canivores, forms of lifes that consume other forms of life to survive, parasyte has a double meaning because parasites in a broad sense is nothing more than a form of life getting its substance from another, which after seeing the show, makes you think if there is any difference between that definition of parasite vs carnivores, we both disregard any ... other form of life apart of ourself to nourish us.

So yeah... the show spends its whole run showing how vile the parasytes are, just for us to be the other side of the same coin, and not only for being carnivours but for damaging the earth too.

Apart of that theme, there is the subtheme of growing, just like the parasytes grow in this anime, we see the main character grow aswell. We start off by being someone shy that after dealing pain to his mother, becomes a shell of itself, we dont see much of him but he probably didnt feel much if at all, would have certainly gotten bullied and would have never believed that he could be loved.

I am not saying this last part to make it seem that the anime is like something it isnt, but he undoubtly progresses as a person be it for having someone to bond, or for the many traumatic experiences. Which are two of the only ways to actually change in my opinion and the parasytes show it aswell, the two parasites with human host, the parasyte that became a mother, they bonded and grew much more than any other parasyte even when supposedly being weaker.

Lastly lets talk about the fragility of the parasytes, they mention this multiple times and if you really think about it you can really get to understand to what level of fragility they all have. We clearly see this with the 5-man parasyte, the reason he dies is not only because his weakness to compounds but also because he could not align all the parasytes to defeat izumi before regenerating.

And just like he could not align his 5 parasytes minds, I think something similar happens to every single parasyte, they need to be conceptually and mentally strong to remain whole, funnily enough they werent more easily defeated exactly because the military could not concieve of these alien-like manhunters to be frail, they are shown to think only about the possibility of ultimately killing them, which they intend to do with a high caliber shotgun. However exactly that is what makes it hard for them to be victorious.

Any use of fire, acid or mostly anything that affects cells in a pretty heavy way, just like they affect us, would have done the job much more efficiently. But they ignore that, just like we ignore everything that we put in the bound of not in our control even if it is in out total control, which goes over the many mentions of other live and the world suffering.

This show is pretty funny, and pretty unique too. Lots of different elements I did not expect. Definitely has been a fun watch so far!

For how funny and lighthearted it is overall, I was surprised at how serious / dark it got sometimes. Definitely an interesting mix of genres and themes in this one. Its a very basic harem. Its not bad by any means. It just doesn't do anything amazing.

The characters are likeable enough. But you wont remember them when you're done watching.

Indie productions aren’t especially common in the anime industry (off the top of my head I can’t name any in fact), and while I imagine it wouldn’t be the most difficult thing in the world for a solo creator to produce a moderately decent slice of life comedy short Atsuya Uki was ambitious in choosing to make Cencoroll a nearly half hour long sci-fi action flick. By all means this is more of a display of technical prowess rather than anything you would watch for a satisfying story. The characters rarely speak — aside from Yuki who I suspect is because they somehow managed to ... get the wonderful Kana Hanazawa to voice — and things sort of just happen sporadically. Yuki happens to see Tetsu and his creature Cenco, afterwards they’re seen by another boy who happens to be in control of two of those creatures and then they fight for the rest of the movie. Cencoroll makes a blatant rush towards the action, the first quarter is riddled with the kinds of quick cuts between developing scenes that are a staple of indie filmmakers who want to get to the point. As a result there isn’t anything of extreme depth to be found here but it manages to get the job done, and sets the stage for what Uki really wanted to accomplish: showing off his animation skills.

If there’s something that Cencoroll understands it’s the dynamics of movement. Maybe this is really just due to the limitation that obviously comes paired with being a solo project, but movements end up being either snappy or ridged with both being executed logically and in a fashion which is satisfying to the eye. Yuki and Tetsu may not be the focal point of the movie but all of their movements contain a urgent fluidity to them that captures the kind of movement that you’d typically see in action shonen shows like Naruto. It makes sense because generally speaking if they have to move it’s going to be because they have to evade some sort of danger (y’know from the giant aliens they control). This fluidity carries over to said danger as whenever the aliens engage in combat typically their movements will be executed with far more precise fluidity. It differs from the kind of movement that you would see from the human characters because their bodies are fundamentally different, Cenco’s especially as it constantly transforms itself into a variety of different forms. The fluidity compliments their alien bodies which are full of lengthy appendages which would naturally sway and snap as they swiftly travel from place to place. Cenco’s transformations are handled in a similar way as his body morphs like putty into whatever new absurd shape it feels like becoming. As the film progresses the size of the aliens only continues to grow and as a consequence their range of motion becomes more limited and they become more rigid. Again, this follows the fundamental understanding of motion that they had regarding the capture of speed and it creates a far rawer display of power as these gargantuan beasts tower and stumble over the city.

Of course, just as with the plot and characters, placing such a large focus on the visually impressive action comes at the price of the remainder of the visuals. Backgrounds end up feeling a little barren, even for a city the world contains extremely little detail only permitting the minimum to pass as a fitting setting to be destroyed. This kind of aesthetic style isn’t actually that uncommon nowadays in certain shows which choose fully embrace it and use the less refined style as a tool to manipulate the world more freely, but none of that occurs here. Even as we travel inward, as Cenco acts as a shield for his human commanders, the internal structure of the aliens feel a little empty and uninspired only containing generic monocolored walls of flesh. Clearly all of the imagination was allocated towards the aliens and their transformations rather than the world which inhabits them.

Cencoroll is a fairly ambitious technical showcase which demonstrates Atsuya Uki’s creative potential. While the aliens are rich in imagination I can’t help but compare this movie to the kinds of underdeveloped fantasies often seen in children. Ones which are severely underdeveloped in terms of scenario and more keen on elaborately designed monsters who will run amok in the world, destroying everything in their paths. Cencoroll may run for only slightly longer than your typical anime episode but it doesn’t even make an attempt at using any of that time towards telling a satisfying story. Half an hour is more than enough time to get an audience fully immersed into a world, either through direct or indirect storytelling, but instead it rushes past all of that in favor of action. Cencoroll may be an incredibly impressive independent feat, but the sum of its parts don’t measure up to the bar it sets for itself.

Dororo is a black and white anime produced right around when color television was being proliferated. But the choice to stay black and white was the right call, as it makes the ancient Japan setting and demonic vibes more immersive. More importantly, it adds to the series' foreboding atmosphere...at least in the first half.

You see, this show can actually be divided pretty solidly into two halves. The first half of the show, simply titled "Dororo", is really more about Hyakkimaru, the sword-swinging youth slaying demons to regain his body. The titular Dororo is a bratty kid that tags along with him. Dororo can be rather ... annoying, and the available scratchy audio quality doesn't do his shrill voice or snotty attitude any favors. But Hyakkimaru is fucking cool and it adds a satisfying feeling of progress to the otherwise monster-of-the-week story to watch him regain something new after each battle. Granted, the importance of his missing body parts is handled rather messily, but the question of "What will he get back this time?" was something in the back of my mind every episode.

In the first half of the show, storylines always spanned two or even three episodes at a time. This meant that these stories have lots of time to develop, and we got a lot of these awesome slow suspenseful eerie scenes. It's in this time spent with the freaky ass monsters that the show's black and white visuals really shine. The show felt really serious and somber and I was pretty into it. The suspenseful pacing, bloody action scenes, and at-times tragic atmosphere was, as the kids say, a vibe.

In the second half, the show appears to experience a bit of a re-tool, and this is why my recommendation is split. The series is retitled "Dororo and Hyakkimaru" in the second half, but ironically I recall the focus being more on Dororo at that point. The show has the same premise-- Hyakkimaru is still slaying demons--but the pacing and structure are altered as storylines are now one-and-done. Befitting the increased emphasis on Dororo over Hyakkimaru, there's more slapstick comedy, including an episode about a monster underneath a guy's butt, and I think he even farts on it.

The first half of this series resonated with me way more, but I will admit the final episode was great, if rushed. The quality of animation is at least consistent throughout the series, and is certainly a lot better than the few other 60s anime series I've sampled such as Astro Boy and Gigantor. I would give the first half an 8/10 and the second half a 6/10, so splitting the difference with a 7/10 seems fair. I recommend watching the first 13 episodes, and then skipping to the finale if the retool rubs you the wrong way. I don't think you'll miss much handling the show this way.

There’s no doubt that Frieren is a lovingly crafted series. Its quietness is refreshing, its animation polished, and its central theme — the passage of time and the weight of memory — is handled with care. It’s serene, introspective, and even moving at times. But once the stillness settles and the dust clears, one question remains: does it truly deserve to be considered the greatest anime of all time?

At the time of writing, Frieren sits at the very top of MyAnimeList — ahead of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Steins;Gate, Hunter x Hunter, Clannad: After Story, ... Violet Evergarden, and many others that have not only stood the test of time, but helped define the medium itself. That alone should make us pause.

Frieren is not a story of revolution or transformation. It’s a quiet meditation, a soft breeze in a stormy world. But a breeze — however welcome — is not a monument. Its emotional resonance is gentle, but rarely profound. Its themes are thoughtful, but often repeated. Its characters, though likable, are largely static. We observe Frieren looking back, but the story itself rarely reaches forward. We see moments pass, but few that truly stay with us.

Compare this with Violet Evergarden, where grief and hope are woven into every word and gesture. Or Natsume’s Book of Friends, which explores fleeting human connections with more emotional depth and subtle worldbuilding. Even Mushishi — minimalist and nearly two decades old — delivers more lasting wisdom and atmosphere in a single episode than Frieren often achieves across full arcs.

There’s also the question of pacing — not in its slowness, which suits the tone, but in its lack of narrative gravity. Frieren rarely builds tension or explores real change. It is content to coast gently, quietly, and comfortably. That’s fine — even welcome — in a season. But should it really be the #1 anime of all time?

This review is not written in spite. Frieren is a good anime. It offers something rare, and it does so with grace. But a score above 9.30 implies something else entirely: that it is among the most profoundly impactful anime ever made. That it changed lives. That it etched itself into the collective memory of the medium. And it hasn’t — at least not yet.

We should appreciate this series for what it is: beautiful, calming, introspective. But let’s not confuse emotional quiet with emotional weight. Let’s not crown a work eternal before it’s even finished its journey.

Enjoy Frieren. Let it resonate, if it speaks to you. But save the top spot for the stories that don’t just whisper — they echo.

The anime has a really slow start to the point where I had to take breaks every few minutes into each episode. It gets better from around the 5th episode where the plot slowly starts progressing.

Let's get this out of the way first: switching between multiple art styles is not terribly impressive. Mary Poppins merged live action with cartoons back in 1964, and the blending of various animation styles is nearly as old as animation itself. Similarly, satire of the classic superhero genre is also nothing quite new, and there are a plethora of stories that unravel our understandings of heroic characters. So, if To Be Hero X is not doing anything NEW, then it must certainly be doing something WELL, right?

First, looking at the story. We begin with Lin Ling, an everyman type who becomes one of the ... heroes he's idolized, only to discover that super-life isn't all it's cracked up to be. A great start to the series, but then things begin slipping. By the third episode, scenes and dialogue are already moving at a quick pace to rush viewers into the next plot point, the next twist, or the next sudden action scene. Despite this, Lin Ling's struggles keep the viewer rooting for his success as he's immersed in the spotlight against his will. When he at last acquires The Commoner title, an idea of narrative direction has begun to take shape! Sadly, that's exactly when the story unceremoniously drops Lin Ling altogether and a new main character appears. Finally the true purpose of the show is revealed: To Be Hero X is a disappointing anthology of superhero origin stories. Introduce a character, get the audience attached, then yank them away before they have a chance to get involved in the wider world. This is not superhero satire! This is textbook, basic Marvel-movie fluff.

Now, this in itself is not normally a problem. However, set in a world where “faith” turns people into superheroes, i.e. if people believe that someone can fly, then that person gains the ability to fly; it is expected that our characters would work to dismantle, or at the very least expose, this unequal Trust system. But that is not the goal of To Be Hero X. Instead, the goal is to introduce the audience to marketable characters, to get people buying figurines of Lucky Cyan. Is this not what Lin Ling was fighting against...? What To Be Hero X should be focused on is telling a compelling story, especially since superheroes are common ground for most audiences. Unfortunately, it feels as though the show has it's priorities set on flashy character designs and animated eye-candy.

Speaking of, to the animation's credit, the textures and rendering of 3D segments are quite pleasing. Colour choices and backgrounds are all well done, especially for TV. However, viewers who might initially be wowed by the fast-paced action, will slowly start to notice the stiff facial features and awkward body movements during quiet character moments in later episodes. Whether these animation choices were imposed on the artists by their director, or it came about through 3D rigging limitations, is unknown. Regardless, the 3D artists seem afraid to make the heroic pretty characters look "ugly" and have avoided strong facial acting. For example, in My Hero Academia, when a character is struggling with a fight: eyes widen, hair is messed up, and there might be massive swelling on their cheek from where they were punched. That isn't the case as much in To Be Hero X's 3D segments. Viewers will notice that the second half of Lin Ling's fight with God Eye switches suddenly to 2D animation just as our main character's passion has reached it's peak. This isn't an artistic choice; in truth, it's likely because the 3D artists were unable to deliver the emotional impact of the scene. The series' 2D segments however, are perfectly fine. The quality, like most shows, fluctuates between adequate and mildly impressive. The highest highs during combat however, are admittedly outshined by other shonen action series of this generation, such as Demon Slayer and MHA.

In short, despite the packaging promising a unique and thought-provoking experience, both the animation and story may leave some audiences feeling as though they swallowed a bag of brand name candy. To Be Hero X provides a familiar dopamine rush, and that's about it. For what the show does with middling competence, other series have tackled with greater skill and understanding.

People who are looking for a proper satire or critique of the superhero genre should check out the Watchmen comic book by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. However, if reading comics is unappealing, Amazon's The Boys is another good choice. In terms of commenting on the court of public opinion and life in the spotlight, Oshi no Ko, BoJack Horseman, and Perfect Blue do this fairly well. For folks who just really enjoy this series' 3D art style, Netflix's Arcane or Sony's Spiderverse films are solid recommendations that avoid some of the stiffness that appears in To Be Hero X. Lastly, if the combination of multiple animation styles is what gets a viewer hooked, they'd be far better off watching The Amazing World of Gumball.

Note: This review was made before I watched the sequel "Ave Mujica". Some criticisms may be refuted in the sequel, but I am reviewing this as a standalone work. If you are wondering, I personally recommend this anime, but beware if you hate melodrama (you will punch your screen).

Spoilers ahead.

There are a ton of anime focusing on girl groups and music (ranging from idols to bands to DJs to superpowers). MYGO is another one of these anime, and it excels in creating extremely realistic (and irritating) school drama. This can be compared to a work such as White Album 2, where the purpose of the ... anime is to make the viewer want to punch the screen (this is a compliment). The four main girls are incredible in which nearly every action they did until the climax made me facepalm. I have to applaud the writers because even after all of this tomfoolery, I was still invested in the band's future.

Even though this is a positive review, I will start by addressing the flaws. Notably, Raana is barely a character and more of a plot device (specifically for episode 10, the climax). The only characterization we get of her is that she was supposed to perform in her grandma's live house, but it got shut down. That's... basically it. Nothing else to say really, which is a missed opportunity. I also have to criticize the actual ending of the series for MYGO (where Anon and Tomori talk to one of the girls in Ave Mujica). To me, this is a bit inconclusive. We also don't know anything about Mutsumi except that she never thought CRYCHIC was fun and that she joins Ave Mujica (I'm assuming these will be explained in Ave Mujica, but her inclusion in the series does literally next to nothing over than be a person Soyo hates). Lastly, the fact that Sakiko's reason for leaving CRYCHIC was never mentioned to the girls and only alluded to the viewer in the last 30 seconds of the anime. I love the drama in the anime, but seriously? Bit contrived and convenient.

Going on to the positives, the drama (which is equivalent to middle school/high school girls slapfighting for 9 episodes) is so well executed. Every single one of the four main girls is developed and fleshed out to an extent they actually feel like real people. It shows people haunted by their pasts and getting through it, possibly to the best extent an anime has done. I especially sympathize with Anon's problems during the series, but credit is due to Tomori, Taki, and Soyo. I also like how even after they got back together in the end, not everything is sunshine and rainbows. Ending their conflict wasn't a magical healing bandage, but rather a change in their personally that finally let them mesh together as "lost girls" (aka MYGO!!!). Music, voice actresses, plot are all phenomenal.

Anon is one of the best anime protagonists realistically. She is a very unique and interesting character, and after Episode 5 she truly does her best for the rest of the band. Tomori is the driving force, both as the vocalist and the lyrics writer, and the person who kickstarted the band's reunion. I respect her willpower even after CRYCHIC and the events of the series. Taki is a very protective character, albeit the least developed of the four. She is headstrong and pushes many of the events in the series forward. Soyo is one of the best examples of codependency in fiction and the wrongness of codependency through her character arc (shoutout to Sakiko's rant). Soyo's collapse and slow recovery is expertly crafted, and while I hated her at times I could sympathize with her at the same time.

Overall, this is an amazing anime. One of the best character studies made in the medium (possibly THE BEST), which definitely could change perspectives and lives (it sure did for me!)
