You know... It started off great. Then it keeps getting worse. People being manipulated, people playing with Yu's feelings (literally)... It's horrible. The only reason I watched up to episode 11 is because I don't like leaving shows unfinished.
If one wants to watch people being gaslit, learn what a decade-long situationship looks like, or are a psycho/sociopath, this show is perfect!!! 😊

A big disappointment to a great webcomic, where they butcher the whole thing by their terrible animation.

In The Beginning After the End, do we follow Arthur who is king Grey reborn into another world. We start from the day he is reborn and follow him and the people around him as he grows up. It is classic fantasy isekai, but is told with greater detail since we truly follow him as he grows up.

This show is extremely affected by the show's quality of adaptation, where it can mostly be seen by the animation quality. The animation in itself is horrible, it is done with very ... little details on both big and small actions, with fights mostly consisting of panel changes and not smooth movements between the characters. Almost all fights are ruined by them going at one frame for each action, thereby they are barely animated. There are only a very few moments in the show where the fights are done with a minimum level of animation.
When looking at the dialogue scenes is it also very disappointing, since often are the characters just staring with their mouths moving, and characters that are not speaking are just still images. This all together just ruins the whole experience of the show, since it is hard to enjoy a show where the animation isn’t even average and the lack of quality takes all your attention.

But if we look at the plot separate from the animation, is the plot quite nice. As we follow Arthur do we see him struggle with different things, his emotions from his previous life, learning a new world, and also him just having to live with being a kid again. This gives a nice plot where we see him interact and learning his new world, while his surroundings also reacts to him, making the plot moving forward.The only issue is in some small things in the adaptation, that could have been done better in regards to future plotlines, but in itself is the plot rather nice and really makes you feel like you are following someone's life.

Character wise is most of the meat very much on Arthur, since he is the one we are following throughout the whole season. Arthur is a great character, because he is not perfect, he has issues and even though he has knowledge and skill, does he still meet challenges. While we mostly focus on him through the show, they are not neglecting the other characters around him, though the difference is that they are being built for the long term of the story. So the side characters do not see big changes this season, but instead are having their foundation laid for the future. This overall shows great characters, but with some of them being a slow burner.

Overall the story and characters are great, but is completely ruined by the animation quality of the show. So I cannot recommend this show, but I will recommend reading the webcomic or the light novels, if you are interested in a fantasy isekai where we follow the main character through his life.

The Beginning After the End was one of the most highly anticipated light novel adaptations to come out from outside Japan. Written by Brandon Lee, known by his alias as TurtleMe, this story takes a more careful and genuine approach to Isekai—a genre not typically praised for its strong writing or compelling characters. Boasting one of fantasy’s richest worldbuilding, a meticulously detailed magic system, compelling character-writing, and immersive storytelling, any adaptation—be it manhwa or anime—had some pretty big shoes to fill. After a long wait, the ten-year light novel finally received the anime adaptation the fans have long been waiting for, yet they were not ... happy.

Given how loved and praised the original light novel and manhwa adaptation was, it begs the question: why did one of Isekai’s most well-loved stories receive such poor treatment in its anime adaptation? The backlash grew so loud that the author had to make a statement acknowledging their complaints. And while he didn’t explicitly address his grievances, his disappointment in the adaptation was unmistakably evident.

Quick disclaimer: Despite being a fan of the original light novel myself, this review won’t be a comparison between the adaptation and its source material. The majority of the disappointment The Beginning After the End inspires is mostly due to Studio A-Cat failing to translate the light novel’s writing quality into an anime form, and while these grievances are valid, criticism grounded in comparison fails to provide a fair evaluation of the anime in and of itself. But what remains true with the majority of its criticism is the lack of care, effort, and ambition in adapting this work. While the anime does have its strengths, every good thing you can say will evidently be followed by a “but.”

An episode in, a rushed nature of introduction became painfully clear—overloaded with exposition and character setups squeezed into a brief 20-minute runtime that extends throughout the whole series. Instead of taking the time to introduce the characters, magic system, and world coherently, each episode resembled that of a disjointed slideshow. Its fragmented vignettes gave the impression of a disorganized production, each scene feeling like it’s completely separate from the other despite following the correct timeline.

The Beginning After the End’s world shows an underlying complex magic system. However, the complexity is ultimately dumbed down by a poor introduction, where the concepts of augmenters and conjurers are undermined by weak lectures and visual aids that rival primary school presentations.

The animation and voice acting fall significantly short, even when compared to lower-budget Isekai adaptations. Studio A-Cat’s execution lacks the emotional nuance necessary to convey character traits—Alice’s vulnerability, Reynold’s immaturity yet caring warmth, Sylvia’s selfish yet motherly nature, and Arthur’s curiosity and growth are all diminished. Rather than capturing the awe and vulnerability of someone discovering magic and family for the first time, the production portrays an overly detached tone that undermines the story’s emotional core. While Arthur’s guarded demeanor from his past life justifies some of the restraint, it should have never stripped away his humanity or youthful curiosity.

Still, credit must be given where it’s due. The Beginning After the End’s biggest strength is a rare gem we can find in its protagonist. I praise the series for the way it depicts the characters as individually flawed but provides room and appropriate progression for growth and redemption. Among these characters is Arthur—previously King Grey—whose character writing stands out the most.

Most reincarnation stories follow an overused blueprint: a shut-in NEET or burned-out salaryman dies, is reincarnated or transported, and suddenly becomes an overpowered genius—no questions asked. They rush emotional and intellectual growth, often redeeming flaws and absolving terrible past behavior for the sake of an empty power fantasy. Only a few titles distinguish themselves to be a cut above the rest—to name a few: Log Horizon, keeping its protagonist grounded in strategy as that’s his biggest strength; The Eminence in Shadow, which embraced the protagonist’s strength pre-reincarnation; Re:Zero, that maintains Subaru’s physical weakness while emphasizing emotional resilience; and Mushoku Tensei, which—albeit has its issues—expertly portrays how someone can grow past their trauma.

The Beginning After the End takes a similar approach in its storytelling to that of The Eminence in Shadow, where the protagonist isn’t strong because of reincarnation. Arthur is strong because he was King Grey—someone whose title was earned through brutal one-on-one duels, and social training appropriate for someone assuming the gravitas of a king.

What sets Arthur apart is that his strengths and other seemingly perfect traits don't just carry over. Much like a foreign exchange student translating what he already knows to a new language, Arthur had to translate his knowledge and experience into a new context: an entirely new and immature body, a different magic system, new styles of combat, unfamiliar political structures, and a society he had to integrate into from the ground up. This makes his progression not only believable, but earned.

His magical proficiency isn’t some divine gift of reincarnation, either. His past world had a system akin to mana called “Ki.” It’s similar in principle to augmentation specifically in this new world. This background provides a believable foundation for his competency as an augmenter. Similarly, the mismatch between his combat knowledge and his immature body is a small yet crucial detail to establish a sense of realism to his development. Unfortunately, my praises end here.

As the adaptation currently stands, there is no indication the anime would distinguish itself as anything more than your typical Isekai. Despite having all the ingredients to prepare a thought-provoking and well-written story, the adaptation comes across less like a passion project and more like a marketing investment—a promotional piece to direct new fans to the more delicately crafted manga and light novel. And in all honesty, that is a direction that I wholly encourage everyone to go to—whether you enjoyed the anime or not.

The Beginning After the End is a series which has been steeped in controversy since the first previews for it were released. A lot of this discourse stems from either the adaptation being a disappointment relative to its source material or comparisons to fellow fantasy web novel epic Mushoku Tensei, which often make it feel like the anime is rarely being judged on its own merits, just on how it fails to measure up to prebuilt hype and fan expectations.

But the thing is, none of that really matters. It doesn’t matter how TBATE compares to its source material or to any other shows, not only ... because it has little bearing on the experience of anime-onlies, but also because you don’t need to compare TBATE to anything else to know it’s a bad show, it sucks completely on its own merits.

Let’s start with our central character, Arthur Leywin. On a conceptual level, he at least manages to be something more interesting than other Isekai protagonists by virtue of having an actually interesting life before his reincarnation, having been not some generic schlub from the real world, but a warrior king from a sci-fi universe. From this, the show began to develop an emotional core in its initial episodes, showing Arthur as an emotionally stunted person breaking out of his shell thanks to having a warm, loving family and a semblance of a normal life for the first time.

Now, on paper, this sounds all well and good, but in execution it reveals many of the show’s key flaws. Firstly, the show’s dialogue & scripting is bad. Much of the show, but especially the first episode, are dominated by Arthur’s dry internal monologue, and while internal monologue-heavy writing can benefit a story, just look at The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, but that requires a richness of character and personality that TBATE simply lacks. Arthur’s internal monologue is a dull, monotonous drone which both makes for a detached atmosphere that creates too much of a buffer between the characters & the audience and also offers too little genuine insight into Art’s character to justify how much of the script it takes up. It gets less bad after the first episode, but even then it’s utter drivel. Combine that with how obscenely unnatural the exposition dumping is and how similarly monotonous the rest of the dialogue is, and the result is an utterly dry, charmless experience.

This goes hand-in-hand with another major problem the show has: the characters themselves, which are largely as flat and one-note as can be. Arthur himself is arguably the best of them due to his interesting core concept, but past the first episode or so, he devolves into the generically nice, emotionally uncomplicated, utterly static, hypercompetent isekai protagonist with only flashes of what made him interesting in the first place. But compared to the rest of the cast he might as well be a Kunihiko Ikuhara character in terms of depth, because by god is this cast barren and sauceless. Arthur’s parents are vaguely badass & nice to their kid, Tessia is a generic damsel princess only made unique by often serving as comic relief (despite being incredibly unfunny), and the rest of the cast are so devoid of intrigue even compared to them that they might as well not even have names. They exist to orbit around Arthur and nothing else.

And it’s not just the characterization which suffers due to the poor scripting, as the structure & pacing are also quite bad. There’s a dull mechanical clunk to the clip at which the story moves, every episode a fragmented series of vignettes which gets across just the barebones bullet points of what’s necessary to make the episodic plot happen without any real ability to let the concepts or emotions the script is introducing actually breathe. One episode ends on a note implying the next will be soft and emotional, only for said episode to immediately breeze past the poignant emotions set up within the first few minutes just so it can spend the next section of the episode infodumping about the magic system some more. Any intrigue which might emerge from the narrative is crushed under the weight of getting to the next point in the story outline because it’s written not as an immersive tale to truly be engaged with, but as Content^TM to be mindlessly consumed.

And while the scene-by-scene pace & episode structure are too quick for their own good, the wider narrative is a different form of lifeless & mechanical: the utterly sluggish kind. Much of the plot is essentially a game of pinball where Arthur is catapulted to whatever locale or new conflict the author feels like exploring at any given moment without real agency of his own. This would be fine if there were some meaningful character arcs being progressed, themes explored, or if the narrative itself were more interconnected, but the writing lets itself down on all fronts. The story is practically a random events plot where every arc feels equally devoid of meaning, interesting drive, or genuine connection beyond just sharing the main character. It’s a directionless slog which makes most of its 12 episodes feel like an utter waste of time once it’s all said & done.

The only ideas the show truly commits to consistently conveying are that Arthur is meant to be really badass and this is his shameless power fantasy. While early episodes do make some effort to have him struggle, both physically and emotionally, from the halfway point onwards it’s clear that metaphorically sucking his dick is the story’s only concern. Notably, while the show struggles to spend the proper time developing the genuine emotional core it wants you to think it has, it does reserve an entire episode for an asinine storyline where Arthur effortlessly crushes a one-dimensional jerkish noble who started a pointless conflict with him. The kind of thing that’d be called aura farming if the show were actually cool enough to have aura. It really does show where the writers’ priorities lay when push comes to shove, no? Pretty much the only thing missing from the litany of usual masturbatory slop is the obligatory harem of interchangeable waifus lusting after the MC, and I frankly wouldn’t be surprised if the show ended up introducing one later in the series anyway.

And finally, the elephant in the room: this show looks like utter garbage. Calling it a PowerPoint presentation is an insult so common as to feel cliche at this point, but it’s overused because it’s true. Every episode has boatloads of cheap limited animation which particularly stands out to most people because it’s used specifically for the scenes which would actually require some modicum of effort to do. Whether it be something relatively complex & dynamic like a fight scene or something that’d require emotional weight like a major character reuniting with their family, all of them are rendered with nothing but cheap pans over still frames rather than anything actually dynamic or animated.

Though it’s not like the actually animated parts look all that much better. Even at its best, the show’s character animation is stiff and its direction lifeless. The utter blandness of the art style also sticks out, the show’s entire visual identity is wholesale copied from every other piece of JRPG-inspired slop to come out of the anime industry in the last two decades, and the show’s occasional meager attempts at invoking awe are ruined by this to a laughable degree. Like, for example, there’s one episode where Art enters a city that’s supposed to seem amazing based on his reactions and the whimsical music, but when the camera is actually on the environment it’s nothing but a couple static panning shots of a small smattering of people doing nothing while standing in front of the most blandly designed houses you will ever see, at which point all the wonder the series is trying to invoke just completely dries away.

Honestly, the worst thing about the shitty animation is that it isn’t even shitty in an interesting way. At least the Berserk 2016s, Ex-Arms, and Hand Shakers of the world are breaking new ground in their ability to fail and end up becoming comedy disasterpieces as a result. TBATE couldn’t even be bothered to be that level of fun bad, it’s just shitty in the same way every other slop isekai is and making fun of its visuals stops being fun once you’ve exhausted the PowerPoint jokes. Seriously, a high profile failure to this degree not even being ambitious enough to fail in a spectacular manner is the worst sort of failure.

Maybe the source readers are right and there’s a good version of TBATE out there somewhere, whether that be the web novel, the webtoon, or just some idealized vision in the mind of its original author. I don’t know and that ultimately doesn’t matter here, but what I can say with certainty is that their anime adaptation is absolutely not worth your time in any respect. It is devoid of any passion, creativity, and soul to a genuinely insulting degree and I hate myself for spending so much time on it.

A good show with an interesting power system. I'd be tempted to call this another big dumb shonen, except it's not actually dumb. Characters use their poers in unique ways to overcome obstacles and outsmart opponents. This is more of a big silly shonen. While solutions may be smart, they are also absurdly silly. I honestly don’t even know what I watched. I can’t remember anything from the story—just the feeling of my IQ steadily dropping the longer I kept watching.

I’d rather rewatch Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni. than sit through this again.

I don’t know who thought the “clueless, low-IQ protagonist who doesn’t understand their own strengths” trope was a good idea, but this takes it way too far.

Sakamoto Days is one of those rare manga that blends action, humor, and heart in a way that feels fresh yet comfortably familiar. As a manga reader, I had high expectations when the anime adaptation was announced. And while it doesn’t knock everything out of the park, Season 1 of Sakamoto Days delivers a very good adaptation that lays a strong foundation for what’s to come.

Having read the manga, I can confidently say that this is just the beginning. The truly insane arcs are yet to come and when they do, this series has the potential to break the internet.

A New Flavor of Action-Comedy
At its ... core, Sakamoto Days is a story about Taro Sakamoto. A former top-tier hitman who leaves behind his dangerous lifestyle to live a peaceful life as a convenience store owner with his family. But peace never lasts long for a man with a past, and soon, he's drawn back into the world of assassins, criminals, and chaos. What makes the series unique is its mix of intense, well-choreographed action and genuinely hilarious moments. It doesn't take itself too seriously, but when it needs to deliver on emotion or high stakes, it does.

The anime captures this tone very well. The comedic timing lands, and the quirky personalities of the characters are maintained without diluting their danger or skill. Watching Sakamoto go from chubby shopkeeper to lean, deadly assassin in a split second never gets old.

First Impressions & Animation Style
I’ll be honest, when the anime first started, the animation felt a bit... off. Not bad, but different. The style had a slightly stiff or minimal feel in the opening episodes, and it took me a moment to adjust. But after a few episodes, I got the hang of it. It grows on you, and once the story picks up and the characters start interacting more dynamically, the visual choices begin to make sense.

That being said, the action sequences, while decent, could’ve been more elegantly animated. Given how fluid and cinematic the fights are in the manga panels, I was hoping for that same level of choreography in the anime. There are definitely moments that shine, especially when the animators lean into creative combat scenarios, but overall, there’s room for improvement.

Faithful Adaptation with Great Character Work
One thing that really stood out to me was how well the characters were adapted. The voice acting choices are solid, and the personalities we love from the manga come alive on screen. Whether it's the stoic but deadly Sakamoto, the energetic Shin with his mind-reading ability, or the other colorful characters like Lu and Nagumo, the casting and performance felt spot-on.

Each character plays a unique role in balancing the humor and action, and the anime does a good job of letting them shine. Their chemistry builds naturally across episodes, and by the end of the season, you start to feel emotionally invested in their journey.

A Season That Sets the Stage
As a first season, this adaptation does its job well. It introduces the world, sets up the main players, and hints at the darker, more intense storylines to come. There’s a sense of control in the pacing, making sure new viewers aren’t overwhelmed while still giving manga readers enough to appreciate.

However, fans of the manga know what’s coming next. The arcs ahead are darker, more complex, and packed with some of the best fight scenes in recent manga history. If the anime team handles it right, Season 2 has the potential to explode in popularity. There are fights, characters, and emotional moments that could easily go viral if adapted with the right intensity and polish.

Final Verdict
Sakamoto Days Season 1 is a very nice adaptation. Faithful, funny, and full of potential. It might not be perfect, but it’s clear the creators understand what makes this series special. For new viewers, it’s an engaging introduction to a unique world of assassins and antics. For manga readers, it’s a satisfying start with the promise of even better things ahead.

I truly believe this series has massive appeal. The combination of high-octane action, lovable characters, and unpredictable storytelling makes it the kind of anime that can reach a much wider audience, especially once it hits its peak arcs. And judging by what I know is coming, things are only going to get more exciting.

Season 1 was good. Season 2? It could be legendary. I’m waiting and I know many others are too.

This was the season of the witch, and I mainly gave this a try because I liked some of the artwork. The character designs were a bit cliche but kinda cute, too. There's nice background work applied. The animation is kind of a mixed bag. There's some decent sections, to be sure, but there's some obviously sketchy scenes tossed in as well. It came across to me as there weren't enough resources put into this, as would have been needed to make the animation top notch.

The Too-Perfect Saint: Tossed Aside by My Fiancé and Sold to Another Kingdom - Is there a price for perfection? If so, how much of it is sacrificial?

"You can tell more about a person by what people say about you than by what others say about him." This quote about human integrity rings ever so true, given how we're so sucker-punched into stories of blatant negligence that can lead to either results of life's redemption or long-term karma, because let's be honest, as "intelligent" as we humans can try to read one another like pseudo-psychics, there's no one predictable way of ever knowing how the ... people around us will act. This is exactly the case for rookie novelist Kouki Fuyutsuki with her very first work here: Kanpekisugite Kawaige ga Nai to Konyaku Haki sareta Seijo wa Ringoku ni Urareru a.k.a The Too-Perfect Saint: Tossed Aside by My Fiancé and Sold to Another Kingdom, a pseudo "kicked/banished out of the hero's party"-esque simple plot with a story that some might call predictable, but it works, and that's what matters the most.

If you're the type to associate yourself with being a fan of Disney's Princess series stories, Kanpeki Seijo will surely have nuances that "maketh the magic happen," because it's a tried-and-true formula that has proven great time and time again. The story goes off of a young woman by the name of Philia Adenuaer, serving as a saint for the kingdom she's assigned to: Girtonia. Her stoic but benevolent nature easily gets the attention of the townsfolk, who've seen her miracles happen time and time again, always giving thanks to the emotionless but compassionate young woman who sees her Saint job as one she's duty-bound to prove her competence in. Well, that's until her betrothed, the kingdom's 2nd Prince Julius, chooses to boot her out of the kingdom to serve another kingdom, finally giving him the chance to run the kingdom on his two feet...except that he's anything but a just prince: evil, selfish, petty, and a manchild at that for making rash decisions that slowly concoct the recipe of destruction for Girtonia. With minor retaliation on her part, Philia makes her way to the neighbouring kingdom of Parnacorta, which has recently lost its Saint, and she's there to fill in the gap.

Little did Philia know that her style of overwork has never caused her to relapse, not even for a day, as her saintly duties make her the robotic Saint who seeks to fulfill the wishes of her own people and not relinquish her responsibility. That's how (un)appealing the former Saint of Girtonia is as a main character, who goes around like nobody's business just doing things as she sees fit and earning the compassion of the people, regarding them and not herself. This may look selfless, but as humans, we could all afford to be a little selfish, and Philia, simply put, she's always taken advantage of for her impressive magic abilities, without a shadow of a doubt. Compare her with her younger sister, Mia, and you'll find an even better story to find there, as her revenge-seeking plot against Julius for banishing her out of Girtonia, mixed in with the burden she's had to fill in from her older sister as a less experienced Saint, shows a part of what seems like a broken family tree that does not just involve the sisters alone. And as the story progresses, the case of the Adenauer family is nastier than you'd realize, as it's filled with one of unmet expectations that beset the nature of betrayal that both Mia and Philia need not go through, but the author puts the nuance there to add some drama to an otherwise predictable story and premise.

For sure, Kanpeki Seijo wants you to realize that the characters play the biggest role in the make-or-break sequences, as even the minor interactions can prove critical to the role at hand. Take the royal family of Parnacorta, for example: with the loss of their kingdom's Saint, both 1st Prince Reichardt and 2nd Prince Osvalt were on the lookout for another Saint, and the misfortune of Julius' booting gives their land a new Saint's blessing in disguise, though it's up to the latter prince to help refocus the emotionless and robotic Saint to gather her thoughts that she doesn't need to work this hard and to start placing trust in others as they are. Bear in mind that this open nature is very foreign to Philia, and Osvalt is trying to help her by befriending her and opening up to live life to the fullest. It takes time for Philia to realize that all the "hard work" she's doing is not only for her own benefit but also for the benefit of the people who fervently support her in her new environment, to ensure that her efforts do not go unnoticed. And yes, as one of the main characters, it can be a hard pill to swallow, but eventually Philia does let loose of her control (except for stress-inducing circumstances when external factors threaten the safety of the kingdom). Again, since this is a fantasy romance Shoujo at heart, don't expect a radical story, just one that's down-to-earth in its simplicity so that the characters can run the race for the long term.

After the failure of Fall 2022's Shinobi no Ittoki, TROYCA's in-house director Shuu Watanabe looks set to redeem himself of the former's infamy as a show that's all plot and no substance, and thankfully Kanpeki Seijo delivered on that front, even if it isn't as hard-hitting as some would've thought for a cookie-cutter premise that just simply works. I need not say that TROYCA is one of a handful of studios with a healthy production cycle of no more than 1 show per year, and to the studio's testament, the production is unsurprisingly great with a reputation to match.

The music is plenty fine and doesn't stand out much so that the story can stretch its legs, which it does its job. Riria's OP and WON's ED are both good songs on their own with the Shoujo feeling attached to them, though I just find myself skipping them because they're just there and honestly don't add much to the allure of the anime as a whole.

At the end of the day, Kanpeki Seijo a.k.a The Too-Perfect Saint, is not just a promising work from a rookie author who chooses to play it safe with story elements that will resonate with people, but the anime definitely helps lean into what makes the source material compelling to begin with. Yes, the overarching story just feels begrudgingly basic, and that's the one pet peeve I have with shows that just don't try to be different, but if you just need a linear story where the "red thread of fate" always finds a way to fall into place, then Kanpeki Seijo may very well be the show for you.

The Saint who never smiled, may she don a smile for you to release the cold, burdenful heart.

Kanpekiseijo was one of my favourite shows of the season. I’m a sucker for emotionally repressed and abused characters developing emotions and realizing they deserve to be loved. It’s kind of a cheap way to illicit an emotional response, but hey it works for me. I went through a gambit of emotions watching this from anger at seeing someone as kind and thoughtful as Philia being abused for the simple crime of existing, despite all her contributions to the kingdom she’s only seen as fodder, to straight up crying with some of the big set pieces. While not a shojosei technically because it’s a LN, ... it has a lot of those tropes and storybeats which I enjoyed. If you’re a fan of badass female characters who are calculating and methodical, you’ll enjoy this.

What makes this series especially good is the revenge plot that’s the central theme of the series. While Philia is sold off to another country and starts to see all the things she was missing out on in life, her sister plans to get revenge on the prince that wronged her. Honestly, at times I felt like Mia was more of the MC in this series. She commands attention in every scene she’s in and frankly her plotline was more interesting than Philia’s. That’s not to say I don’t love seeing Philia grow as a person and be treated well after years of abuse, but seeing a character methodically planning their revenge and putting on the acting performance of the year to avoid suspicion was just really fun. I’m a huge house of the dragon fan so I saw a lot of similarities there in terms of how Mia plays things. On the other side, again, I did like seeing Philia’s relationship with the other characters, especially the prince, developing. She’s such a sweetheart and deserves the world.

Like most seasonals these days, this felt like a prologue for the actual story and an invitation to read more. I got a lot of the same vibes I had from Saint’s Magic is omnipotent with this one so if you’re a fan of that, you’ll probably enjoy this too. The romance is probably weaker here though because we have a split narrative with two leads essentially. Still, it’s an enjoyable watch with some really pretty art and character designs, nice character interactions and a solid enough story. I would love to rate it even higher, but I just felt like this was an appetiser for the real story to come and outside of the Julius/Mia revenge plot and a couple twists I thought the story here was.. solid, not great, but solid. Still, I enjoyed it a lot and am going to miss my girls Philia and Mia so much! Checking out the books for sure

This anime tries to deliver on action, comedy, and gourmet themes—though with varying levels of success. There are funny moments, a bit of fanservice, and some surprisingly decent fights. I honestly expected them to be worse, so that was a nice surprise, even if they’re not amazing. The gourmet aspect is there in concept, but I wish it leaned more into it like Food Wars does.

The art style is nothing special by today’s standards, but for a 2011 release, it's serviceable. While the show has its moments and a fun premise, I just couldn’t push myself to finish it.

Why? Cuz I can predict what happens next like literally, I was skimming through the entire anime and it literally is 1:1 copies of other long ass title I got shafted by my former party troupe. It's funny these authors/mangaka just literally prob copy the format of other authors work and tweak it a little, like, "You can copy my homework but don't make it obvious".

With a generous marketing wheel and promotional effort, you'd at least expect a franchise like Beginning After The End to inspire some hope into a market dominated by isekai in today's industry. But no matter how much marketing or word of mouth spreads, Beginning After The End further proves that even popular franchises can fall short to mediocrity. This here, is another abject failure that proves popularity doesn't equate quality.

From the moment Studio A-Cat was announced as the studio, high hopes were tossed out the door. Their resume of anime projects in recent years haven't exactly set the bar high. Still, I was slightly optimistic ... because a studio doesn't always determine right away if a show is set up for failure. Yet, I was quickly proven wrong when the OP song played for the first time. WIth a style similar to an animated powerpoint presentation, it really dropped the ball for animation quality and further dashed hope for the fanbase. Watching this show from day one felt like a chore marked by struggles to keep up with the poor writing and characterization.

Arthur Leywin, a reincarnated young man from his former days as King Arthur stars as the main protagonist. It's fitting for its title as after his end, his new life sets a beginning. Armed with the knowledge of his previous life, Arthur chooses to live a peaceful life with a loving family. His change from a ruler to an ordinary person in a fantasy world is an adaptation change he chooses with. That essentially makes the foundation for the first half of the show. We see how Arthur lives his life and cherishing his newfound youth. He shows far more maturity than his age yet still resolves to learn everything he can about the world. Fundamentally, Arthur struggles at times to control his emotions. This turns out to be his character's biggest weakness. Fortunately, he still adapts well with his newfound life especially with his mother and father. Some of the characters he meets also reminds him of his past life, such as Tessia Eralith during his life journey. Furthermore, he also serves as an important mentor figure for the young mage Lilia in later episodes. Arthur become a trustworthy person yet he sometimes doubt himself but makes the best of his new life.

Given the way this season is structured (Season 1), this show falls under short of adaptation standards. It only touches the story on the surface and explores Arthur's young life. Some of the early episodes can feel dragged long enough that overtime, we care less about his development and more about the world around him. The timeskip occurs not long into the season but felt like it was forcefully done to accelerate the storytelling. It almost seems like the show itself knew its own pacing jumping to Arthur's teenage life. With the three year timeskip, we can see that Arthur matured physically and mentally. His magic powers has grown as well although the story still recommends him to attend Xyros Academy, a school known for producing reputable individuals to their world. Arthur himself demonstrates abilities and skills far superior to what people expects. It's no surprise given his gifted talents and previous knowledge of his former world. This is proven and demonstrated when he faces off against the Xyros Academy's Cynthia, who is reowned for her skills. Nonetheless, Arthur's life up that point has been short of imperfections. It seems everything always goes too well yet not much change to Arthur's own personality. In fact, it's easy to say Arthur's personality has never been a strong selling point.

Then again, Arthur pretty much has to carry this show on his back. Characters he meets throughout the series are influenced by him in one way or another. Even Sylvie, a non-human character becomes his valued companion. When you have a show revolved just about him, it quickly loses its texture. To be fair in some ways, this anime did want us to believe in Arthur and follow his life journey. From being reincarnated as a kid and maturing into a teenager, this is the beginning after his end. But it feels lackluster, in the fact that he fundamentally remains the same character, unable to truly evolve. It sets the anime back, both storytelling wise and characterization. And because this is just 12 episodes long, we have to wait and see if and when his character will ever change. This show is already confirmed for season 2 in 2026 so until then, hang on to your pitchforks.

The Beginning After the End — more like The Beginning OF the End, and the countless memes this has spawned into a massive shitshow since its debut.

"My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined." Of all the things to say about a potential in the making, TheReportOfTheWeek's meme still stands as one quote that never faded away from obscurity, largely because the world has gone to such an extent of "always over-promising and under-delivering" everything that's great and tearing it down like nobody's business, contributing to a well of hatred. And that show happens to be a work that's very beloved and not made ... in Japan: South Korean-American author Brandon Lee a.k.a TurtleMe and illustrator Fuyuki23's The Beginning After the End (commonly referred to as TBATE for the hardcore fans) are getting the short end of the stick with Studio A-CAT's usual under-delivering prowess that the AniManga industry has witnessed many times over that shows produced by the studio are essentially D.O.A. What the hell happened during the transition of the VERY FIRST adaptation of an American comic that saw a beloved American Webtoon turned into a horrifying adaptation then?

For a high fantasy story that beats pretty much in tandem like the much-acclaimed story of novelist Rifujin na Maganote's Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, I have to say that Brandon Lee sure cooked quite the inspiration that at least, depending on your outlook, either holds or breaks the anime apart. In simple words, King Grey is just like Rudeus Greyrat, only he started off as being this powerful and bloodthirsty king in his mid-30s and tragically had his life beset by an untimely and mysterious death. Thus, reborn as Arthur Leywin, King Grey seeks to correct his past mistakes as the new mythical and fantastical world of Dicathen is at his beck and call. From his growing-up stages, meeting people and entities that he would not have otherwise given two hoots for, I have to say that I truly find Arthur Leywin very interesting and intriguing as a character that's just like Rudeus and not at the same time, as well as more of a mannered kid who tries to not second-guess every move of his to get the best outcomes of a win-win achievement for everyone.

Even the world-building and character development reek of much inspiration from Mushoku Tensei, and I'd argue that it's a good thing for story complexity and what it serves in the long run to explore Dicathen and its 3 kingdoms that are separated by race, along with their eccentric group of people who play host to the former king and his interactions with the rest of the characters. This is especially important because each of the 3 kingdoms is a unique bunch of races that seemingly never cross paths with each other, and Arthur Leywin being the first human to do so speaks volumes about his standing between his human nation of Sapin, the dwarves' underground nation of Darv, and the elves' forest nation of Elenoir, that he's not out for blood but simple reconciliation of trust and bonding to whoever he runs along the way. And for that, the Mushoku Tensei inspiration gets a pass in the story department, as I dig how Brandon Lee finds a way to make his story stand out separately from the juggernaut that is the "Grandfather" of Isekai.

Sadly, even in 2025, the sentiment of negativity is rather large and vocal, and as a voice in the many of absolute dismay that corporate negligence has taken over the already insipid nature of the AniManga industry, this is one of a handful of "tales of precautionary measures" when one seems too eager and excited to have their work be presented on the small screen, only for it to come out quite the disappointment both in viewership and audience opinions (flashbacks to Fall 2017's Imouto Sae Ireba Ii a.k.a A Sister's All You Need with Haruto Fuwa's depiction, anyone remember that?).

For a start, TBATE already had quite the vocal fanbase going for it, if you go around social media and see of its rise to fame that has everyone captivated for what's to come for the series. And Brandon Lee admits that his story "being larger than life" has its challenges, growing from initial criticisms to various strengths along the way, and as a TL;DR kind of PR-phased way to say that The Beginning After the End is a work that now amasses the attention of just about anyone who encounters the series, personal individuals or company corporates otherwise. Yet, rather than blaming TBATE for how Studio A-CAT "chooses" to adapt it to carelessness that leads to the abomination of an amalgamation, many anime "fans" nowadays don't understand that it's a systemic issue that has run in the AniManga industry for about the last decade and 2. Sure, you could argue that Solo Levelling WAS the exception to that rule despite it being a beloved series outside of Japan that STILL had A-1 Pictures and a stellar staff team to adapt and popularize it to the masses, but does anyone remember for a time when Crunchyroll Originals were a thing around the COVID period, adapting Korean manhwas that were pretty much a snoozefest (except for SIU's Tower of God) when all is said and done?

But I digress: going back to TBATE, some will feel to blame Brandon Lee for being naive that the AniManga industry will "offer" him the adaptation that it deserves, not knowing that given how bad Crunchyroll is as an "anime" company with corporate directives so bad and out of touch with the anime community. For that, he kind of admits that he had little to no control whatsoever when it came to the adaptation, and if you HAVE to learn anything about the AniManga industry, it's a cutthroat corporate world where the creatives get very little say, unless it's something the size of Solo Levelling or Sousou no Frieren that the production staff teams were able to have liberties and creative freedom. Sadly, with Studio A-CAT at the helm, this is bound for D.O.A. for any show that the studio gets its hands on, and the majority have called this out, not even when the series hits the "3-episode rule" stride to get massively cancelled outright, and for good reason. And the worst part is, you don't have to look far to see how TBATE got the "7 Deadly (Sins) Frames" animation that just is not good to look at. IMO, I'm okay with how the static imagery looks (as I care about story more than anything), but take one step further for action, and the difference is VERY noticeable. For sure, this is NOT how you want your proud and hard-earned work to stand out in such a discrediting way.

On the music front, Keiji Inai's composition isn't as bad as I thought, but given the list of works he's been attached to for the last decade or so, you'll find that it's pretty much hit and miss. I feel that this could be amped more, and for good reason at that. Otherwise, Canadian music artist KALA's OP is redeemable at best for his first Anisong debut, as is seiza's ED too, though like the anime, the ED visuals are just as horrendous as the main series itself.

The TL;DR is this: no one creator would hate to see his/her work getting butchered by people who understand what goes into anime production and then proceed to ruin the fame and reputation birthed from it, and Brandon Lee a.k.a TurtleMe certainly is not privy to countless other anime that have gone before and been given the less-than-stellar treatment.

For sure, this is one of the biggest "fall from grace" stories that have plagued the AniManga industry, and it certainly wouldn't be the last. So get ready for Season 2 when it comes out next Spring, and be prepared to be met with disappointment once again that the petition to re-do the anime is as unheard from the corporate bigwigs as is much of a business that seeks to disregard and trash the community built from this instance.

I have a deep appreciation for The Beginning After the End and TurtleMe/Brandon Lee, but the anime is a clear misfire more than anything.

It's 2025 and here I am sitting and wondering when when we'll get to see a show about clothes removing as part of its plot. I don't mean it just as part of a story gimmick like High School DxD but an actual plot device to jump start the story. Well, Please Put Them On, Takamine-san is just the answer.

Please Put Them On, Takamine-san is a peculiar case for an ecchi rom-com. It's known for being self aware of both its plot and main female protagonist. Title character Takane Takamine is protrayed as the flawless queen bee, an alluring beauty that catches the eye of ... anyone around her. Her unique ability to rewind time through removing her clothing plays a key role that connects herself to the main male protagonist Koushi Shirota.

The plot essentially builds the relationships through their bizarre chance encounter. After being seen removing her underwear in class, Takane wastes no time to confont Shirota. This more or less ends up being a blackmail as Shirota is forced to help her. In essence, he becomes her manservant without the public's knowledge. As controversial as that sounds, they appear to hide it very well and avoids public himilation. Takane has a reputation so she must always be on her guard. Yet, her own fliritous personality is an obstacle. She is her own worst enemy through the countless teasing she inflicts on Shirota. The latter lives everyday like a test to see if he can pass with flying colors. While it started from being blackmailed, he does geninuely want to protect Takamine over time and the two become trustworthy friends, or perhaps something more?

It's a question we should ask ourselves. Takamine is after all a queen bee while Shirota is just ordinary guy with no special features. The anime protrays Shirota as having perverted fantasies about Takamine often and who can blame him. It's natural for a young healthy guy of his age to fantasize about pretty girls. Takamine is fully aware of this and she weaponizes herself to occasionally win him through lust. However, their relationship at best is protrayed as a budding duo connected through an unusual circumstance. They're not officially a couple although being seeing together so often later in the show makes other characters wonder. The most prominent among these is Shirota's childhood friend Ellie. Her free spirited yet observant nature easily allows her to realize that Takamine is falling for Shirota. Furthermore, Ellie's presence in their lives brings out the jealous side of Takamine. While this show doesn't turn into a dramatic love triangle, it does show that Takamine is willing to safeguard what she considers hers. In this case, she sees Shirota as her property, friend, and partner in crime.

Honestly, the main star and selling point of this show is Takamine herself. Underneath all that perfect goodness, she's a flawed character. If you notice carefully, she hardly has any friends at all, besides Shirota. Even after meeting Ellie, it took several episodes for her to open up to her. Shirota also finds himself falling for Takamine although the anime doesn't make it entirely clear if it's actual love. He's got nothing to lose really but the anime doesn't pull the plug on the two. There's also obvious character connection through some background storytelling told through flashbacks. Takamine's first encounter with Shirota wasn't even in the first episode. Nonetheless, you'll really have to judge yourself on how to grade their relationship. This anime is self aware from day one but has never been sure to finally get the two together as a couple.

It's a show loaded with fan service so just but default, there's a lot of suggestive scenes. I highly suggest watching the uncensored version to avoid the memes. This anime itself is already meme worthy enough thanks to the countless amount of teasing and daydream fantasies. Still, Takamine is decorated with that sexy look you'd expect from this type of show. Long hair, perfect body curves, and colorful face of expressions are just some of her features. While she doesn't show it to the public often, her fliritous personality always causes Shirota to have the most raunchy daydreams possible. You can't help but notice just how self aware this anime is. It knew what it wanted to show the audience from the very first episode.

And in a nutshell, you can watch this anime and enjoy the naughty goodness. It has a ridiculous plot that takes itself somewhat seriously but not enough as a satire. In today's industry, there's all types of anime that weaponizes its fan service. This anime just happens to use it as part of its plot and Shirota is in the middle of it.

Please Put Them On, Takamine-san — If BDSM was ever a genre, this show would fit perfectly by any stretch of the measure.

Look, I think that we could afford at least a moment or two exposing the degeneracy within us to hit some nut, furnish some sea cucumber juice, or by whatever means, extract the sauce within us so sticky and digestible, so palpable that jerking off seems like the kind of habit that we as anime weebs like to frown upon ourselves to show that we embrace being degenerates for better or for worse. However, like all things in life, where there's the good ... in one, there's always the bad in the other, which is where we arrive with mangaka Yuichi Hiiragi's Haite Kudasai, Takamine-san a.k.a Please Put Them On, Takamine-san: a rom-com about how science fiction comes into play of a relationship that need not be so degrading in the first place, that, however, plays for the obsession of it, while harvesting genuine love from within...?

What happens when you pair the average Joe against the Madonna that everyone idolizes, yet has this sense of aura that somehow disguises who she really is to the absence of anyone? You'll get Koushi Shirota, who is the unappealing young man with seemingly no attributes whatsoever, just living out the school life as he sees fit and going along with the typical route of everyday mundaneness, who, out of pure coincidence, sees a stellar young woman taking off her underwear (be it her bra or panties) and witnesses time reversed back to the critical moments of perfection. That would be his school's Madonna and the dignified Student Council president of Takane Takamine, always the perfectionist in her life who cares about nothing other than the people around her witnessing the 100% completionist perfectionism of a young lady of her stature. The irony of the fact is that ONLY Shirota knows what's going on with Takamine's rather bizarre tactics, and to make matters worse, it leaves her completely vulnerable on the inside, like literally wearing a birthday suit on top of her clothes. Of course, Shirota, only being the wise one in this instance, attempts to circumvent this "power" of Takamine's, though he's soon met by the facade that attempts to blackmail him for sexual assault, which he eventually becomes her walking lapdog of a "closet" to refurbish her with whatever article of underwear Takamine will be trading for to turn back time with her so-called "Eternal Virgin Road" magic power.

For a wacky premise of this sort, a rom-com — I'll admit this is one, but it panders to quite the audience that, for better or worse, could turn into a full-on Hentai at this point (see Winter 2024's Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete a.k.a Gushing over Magical Girls, which mangaka Akihiro Ononaka does things A LOT better), which I'm just purely shocked at in many ways, if there ever were a fair few sauces to count about.

For one, I don't know if you're thinking heads with me, but Koushi Shirota is just basically the mangaka's way of saying that "I want to be a decent person, if not held by bondage and domineered by the girl that secretly loves me since my childhood days, being as sadistic and masochistic as possible to derive love pangs from emotional pain." Because, while the childhood puppy love of yesteryear has gone by, it's clear that Takamine has targeted him in more ways than one, if not intentionally at best for the naive boy to see through her real desires of getting together, though in a rather uncomfortable, fetish-sized way possible. There's nothing going for Shirota from the outset as a typical student in the sea of standouts, though with how Yuichi Hiiragi has painted him in a negative light to receive Takamine's "toxic" love through subterfuge and manipulation, this is a relationship that typically would not end well with a lose-lose probability of gaslighting, but yet, it somehow "works" to give the rather wrong idea that "it's all in the head/mind" of a kinky partnership that only benefits one or the other.

As for Takamine herself, I can see the appeal of the Student Council president being the perfect girl for any series in general...again, painted in quite the snarky mind of the mangaka himself. The beauty and splendour that Takamine's "Ojou-sama" presence holds for everyone is foretelling, and aside from the BDSM side of her, I can relate to her very much as a perfectionist personality through and through. This, coupled with her Eternal Virgin Road power, is quite the sci-fi plot that could have been better implemented and experimented with, but it always just ends up being used for the "plot" of sexual innuendos all around. To be fair, her coercing Shirota in her own sexually fantastical ways may not sound like an order but more of a "Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san a.k.a Teasing Master Takagi-san" kind of way that adds to the appeal of girls loving to see their boy partners all flustered out of embarrassment, but I digress for someone who derives amusement out of the same suffering.

At least the OTHER character of note is Ellie Evergreen, and despite being Shirota's childhood friend also, who broke up going to different schools and ends up being in the same cram school as him, she is quite the Yuri with a lesbian feel, with an actual girlfriend in tow. She may look like a rival to Takamine given her voluptuous body, but her character is simple to work around, being nothing more than just an affectionate tease for Takamine in vouching for her secret crush on Shirota. And out of the 3 prominent characters, Eri is the one that most people would vibe with, being the ACTUAL interesting character of note due to her eccentric personality.

Alas, what happens from here on out is quite the tragedy of a less-than-stellar adaptation of an ecchi manga that turns out to be the superior version against the anime. I had doubts going into the show with Liden Films and in-house director Tomoe Makino, whose time at the studio hasn't been flourishing all that well, as compared to being at Felix Film and helming both seasons of Aharen-san wa Hakarenai (of which Season 2 is airing alongside this season). Sure, she could handle shows that don't need much flair, but Takamine-san is clearly an adaptation that needs a lot (and I mean A LOT) of effort to punch in the ecchi notes towards the "I can't believe this is not Hentai" levels of nuance, which this adaptation simply doesn't cut the manga better in every sense of the word. The most annoying and egregious part of them all is the sci-fi interpretation of Eternal Virgin Road, which in its full premise takes up almost a minute or two of the total runtime, which, yes, needs its emphasis, but it's done to an excessive point that just diminishes the value of the show over time. Needless to say, the rather subpar animation from Liden Films does not help much to satiate the "Mahou Shoujo Akogarete" feeling that the anime could have benefitted from by amping up what sells the source material in the first place: the close-to-Hentai-level art of "magnificence." Also, please don't sell Hentai shows to Crunchyroll; they'll abuse the hell out of any level of censorship possible.

The only appeal I've found of this show is in its OP, and honestly, renowned artist Masami Okui feat. Bonjour Suzuki's vocals just slap as a sexual innuendo banger of an OP song. And while Makoto Furukawa's ED is every bit decent as it comes, his high-upbeat vocals give it range for a song that's otherwise forgettable at best.

If you know, you know, and I believe that we're of one sound mind that Haite Kudasai, Takamine-san a.k.a Please Put Them On, Takamine-san could be an ecchi show that has a ridiculous premise to boot and make it work. But yet, by the "grace" of the mangaka Yuichi Hiiragi himself, it exposes quite the fetish story that just disregards any semblance of BDSM, using themes for the sake of fanservice "plot" and actually never going anywhere with the initial idea.

Just go and read the manga; the anime is a complete waste of time with ecchi notes that just don't cut the original source material any better.

Do not watch this. This is not Soul Eater. This is not good. The characters lack personality and feel like cardboard cutouts rather than real people. The plot moves far too quickly, skipping over world-building and character development in favor of flashy battles and forced drama. It's going, going. gone!! A Home Run!!

I must admit I wasn't expecting much from this series, I was deathly afraid it was going to be a typical tropey anime sports title. I was so pleasantly surprised when this turned out to be more a Slice of Life situational comedy in a ballpark. I've spent more than my share of time hanging around major and minor league stadiums all over the US, and I'll testify the producers nailed the vibe perfectly.

This is not a high budget project. The art is kind of mid, although the character designs are decent enough. Some of the background work ... is really good. Animation is a bit of an issue, as it is less than average. But they pinched the pennies in areas that don't hurt the overall feel of being at a game. It's adequate to get it's points across.

The writing for this is exceptional, even though there is no overarching plot, other than "What is a season at the ballpark like?" Each episode consists of three short skits. The writers succeed because they nail the myriad of characters they present to us, and how they react to the situations they find themselves in. Everyone from the cute little girl with momma and daddy at her first game, to the grizzled old veteran who's been haunting the bleachers for decades, to the food stand girl, to the security guards and stadium announcer. The ball players get some play and good background work, but they aren't really central to whats going on, except peripherially. Like a real ball game, folks are paying some attention, but there's lots of socializing going on, too.

The central character is Ruriko the beer vending gyaru. She's such a pip. She's at her best when she's teasing the downtrodden salaryman Murata, who's escaping his drab everyday life by going to see as many games as he can. Her positive upbeat personality uplifts everyone she comes in contact with. But she manages to display a range of emotion as the season plays out. The interaction between these two characters starts out pretty goofy, but over the season they come to know and understand one another. It's not cliche romcom nonsense. It's nice to see these two just being comfortably friendly together,

Because this is so character driven, everything hinges on the cast. I'm here to tell you, they hit a grand slam. It helps the direction did a pretty good job with the resources they were given. There's even a notable quality to the sound and it replicating that exciting, noisy fun feeling one gets while at the park. The ED is a lot of fun too.

This is my Rookie of the Year. Comes out of nowhere to become an All-Star. It's not perfect, but just for sheer enjoyment, I'm putting it into my line up card as a 91/100 for an A-. I seriously doubt this would see a second season, as it probably didn't have much mass appeal. But if Season 2 comes around, I'll lace up the ol' spikes and run the bases with it.

Brave Witches deserved better
So a little context and background history, I first watched this when it was released in 2016, and the studio deserved all the criticism that was thrown their way. They didn't have enough money, enough time, or enough staff working on it.
They were riding high off the success from Strike Witches, and wanted a spin-off, but then decided that they wouldn't put in the same kind of resources towards making that series. For the studio this was a cash-grab.

But for the team behind it, this was a labour of love, and they did the best with what they had, but it was ... rushed and it showed as episodes were released with CGI that was so bad that it looked like they hadn't even finished working on it, this meant that on its release all anyone talked about was how bad the animation was and how it was a significant downgrade from Strike Witches in that regard, and that did have the result of badly affecting its MAL score too.
They improved the CGI significantly (its still bad in places, but believe it or not, it was a lot worse) by the time of the JP Blu-Ray release, but the damage was already done.

Brave Witches deserved better.

Aside from the mishandling of the studio and the bad CGI, Brave Witches is in my opinion the best 'Strike Witches' series
That is a bold claim to make, but one I shall now attempt to justify.

As a series Brave Witches is 'tighter' and more focused, almost every episode reminds us what a perilous state the 502 are in, they are a frontline base, supplies are low and always at risk, there is far less filler, less 'goofing off' or episodes that are there just for fanservice.
Which leads me to the next point, there is far less fanservice, there is still some fanservice as you might expect, but it is in the background, with Strike Witches it is front and centre to the point that they even centre episodes around it, rather than centring it around the main story. This actually makes it far easier to recommend to others without having to worry about the fanservice.

And then we get to the biggest divergence, our MC, Hikari, she has to fight for her place in the 502nd, it's not just given to her, she's the opposite if Miyafuji, who is scouted, had zero prior training, and constantly pressed to join the 501st, has a huge magic capacity, and gets given everything on a plate.
Hikari has to earn everything, she has had training, she has to fight to earn the right to join the 502nd, to get the respect of the others, she has a very weak magic capacity, and she has to learn how to best use it, she has to learn how to get stronger, and she is also told that she can't be her Sister, she can only be herself, so she has to find what it is she can do, and her own way of fighting.

I prefer Hikari as a character to Miyafuji (who is a bit of a mary sue) and it makes for a better story with her journey, as it is far more rewarding, we get to share in her progress and feel that she has then earned her place and the eventual respect of others. You are far more likely to be rooting for her to succeed.

So while it is not perfect, for me this is the strongest entry in the mecha musume genre.
